What happens when we fast?

When we carry out a prolonged fast the body starts to search for energy elsewhere, turning to protein found within our cells. The organelle within the cell with the most protein is the mitochondria. The mitochondria are regarded as the ‘powerhouse’ of the cell and are responsible for generating energy. If our mitochondria are not functioning properly this will affect our overall energy levels and can also impact other conditions including cancer, gastrointestinal problems, MS and chronic fatigue. The mitochondria also play a role in the aging process - as we age there is a natural decline in mitochondrial quality and activity which can trigger inflammation and a range of age-related conditions.

When we fast, our clever bodies break down the unhealthy organelles and leave the healthy organelles, essentially ‘cleaning’ up the cell and the mitochondria. This is why this diet is so powerful playing a role in both the prevention and reversal of disease.

The Regeneration Diet

Michelle option 4A low calorie, low protein diet that you follow for five days. Based on the work by Dr Valter Longo, it’s a scientifically designed fast that ‘mimics’ the effects of water fasts by tricking your body into thinking you are abstaining from food.  After carrying out clinical trials with water fasts and cancer patients, Longo soon realised that people battling cancer found it difficult to adhere to such extreme fasts so he started experimenting with macronutrient combinations to investigate if there was a way of receiving all the benefits of water fasts by consuming a low calorie, low protein diet. After many years of research and funding from the National Cancer Institute Longo developed the five day fast and discovered that this diet provided all the benefits of water only fasting and in some instances performed better.

The Regeneration Diet enables you to eat small amounts of nutritious food - 3 small meals a day - and enter into a five day fasting state which promotes regenerative changes throughout the entire body. The meals have been nutritionally designed to replicate the effects of fasting but also focuses on foods that are nutritionally balanced with an emphasis on healing anti-inflammatory foods that your body and gut bacteria will LOVE. The diet reduces inflammation, increases energy levels and targets damaged cells.
